It’s truly inspiring when our team members share VMSI’s passion for charitable giving, and Janice Boscoe took compassion and altruism to the next level by participating in the “Saving by Shaving” event to raise funds and awareness for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Granite Telecommunications, LLC began the Saving by Shaving campaign two years ago when CEO, Rob Hale, offered to donate $1,000 to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute if one of his employees would shave his long “Duck Dynasty” style beard. Little did he know what an impact and tradition he was starting! In the weeks that followed, over 400 Granite employees shaved their heads or beards for the same cause, with many also donating to Locks of Love. In that first year, more than $2.2 million was raised for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a new tradition was born. In 2015 participation increased to over 550 employees and fundraising climbed to $3.25 million.
Janice Boscoe accompanied by her husband and daughter (a current Granite employee), participated in the 3rd annual Saving by Shaving event hosted by Granite Telecommunications on March 29th, 2016 in Quincy, Massachusetts, where over 700 Granite employees were in attendance.
Granite pledged $5,000 would be donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for every person who shaved their head at the event, thereby rallying support across the state! Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Quincy Mayor Tom Koch, the members of the band Dropkick Murphys and a few local celebrities joined Janice Boscoe and hundreds of others in the barber chairs throughout the day.
At the conclusion of the event, while Janice and many others adjusted to their brave new looks, Granite announced they had surpassed last year’s fundraising efforts and a total of $4.25 million would be donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute!! What an incredible event for a very worthy cause!
